Neurodivergent Pilot Training & Aviation Mentoring

Different Minds. Different Approaches. Same Sky.

Welcome to Flightdeck One Tuition, where we believe that being neurodivergent should never be a barrier to achieving your aviation ambitions.

Whether you’re dyslexic, autistic, have ADHD, struggle with exam anxiety, or simply find traditional classroom teaching doesn’t work for you, you’ve come to the right place.

Here, we don’t expect you to change the way your brain works. We change the way we teach.

A Little About Me

I’m Simon Burnham, founder of Flightdeck One Tuition.

I’ve spent nearly 30 years in aviation, working in various areas of the industry, including flight training, simulator instruction, ground school teaching and mentoring future pilots.

I’m also dyslexic and neurodivergent myself.

So when I say I understand the frustrations of aviation training, I genuinely do.

I’ve experienced the challenges of trying to learn from textbooks, sitting through lessons where information simply doesn’t sink in, and being expected to understand something just because it’s been explained once.

Over the years, I’ve also met some incredibly capable students who have started doubting their ability to become pilots, not because they lack intelligence or potential, but because the teaching methods haven’t suited them.

And that’s exactly why I created Flightdeck One Tuition.

Aviation Training Isn’t One Size Fits All

Let’s get something straight.

Being dyslexic doesn’t mean you’re unintelligent.

Having ADHD doesn’t mean you’re incapable of concentrating.

Being autistic doesn’t mean you can’t communicate, make decisions or work as part of a flight crew.

It means your brain may process information differently.

And different doesn’t mean incapable.

Aviation is an industry built around procedures, structure, problem-solving, situational awareness and decision-making. Many neurodivergent individuals have strengths that can be valuable in these areas.

Of course, every person is different, and being neurodivergent doesn’t automatically make someone a better pilot. But it certainly shouldn’t mean their potential is overlooked.

The key is understanding how someone learns and giving them the tools to succeed.

What Makes Flightdeck One Different?

I’m not interested in standing in front of a student, reading from a PowerPoint presentation and calling that teaching.

If you don’t understand something, we’ll approach it differently.

If you need diagrams, we’ll use diagrams.

If you learn better through practical examples, we’ll use them.

If you need something explained ten times, that’s absolutely fine.

And if we need to have a laugh along the way, even better.

My approach is built around patience, understanding, practical aviation knowledge and building confidence.

There is no such thing as a stupid question in my classroom.

Well, unless you ask whether you can open the window on a Boeing 737 at 35,000 feet!

How I Can Help You

Flightdeck One offers personalised tuition and mentoring across several areas of aviation training:

  • PPL Theory: Helping student pilots understand the nine theoretical knowledge subjects without becoming overwhelmed.

  • ATPL & CPL Theory: Breaking down complicated subjects, calculations and concepts into manageable lessons.

  • Maths & Physics: Building confidence with the fundamentals before tackling more advanced aviation subjects.

  • CRP-5 Training: Learning how to use your flight computer efficiently and confidently in examinations.

  • Exam Anxiety & Confidence: Developing revision techniques, exam strategies and time-management skills.

  • Airline Interview Preparation: Helping aspiring airline pilots prepare for assessments, technical interviews and selection processes.

  • Aviation Mentoring: Supporting students throughout their training journey, particularly when things become difficult.

Every lesson is tailored to the individual rather than forcing everyone through exactly the same teaching programme.

You Don’t Need a Diagnosis to Ask for Help

One thing I’m particularly passionate about is making support accessible.

You don’t need to arrive with a formal diagnosis or a folder full of paperwork.

Perhaps you’ve always struggled with reading.

Perhaps numbers make your brain switch off.

Perhaps you understand a subject perfectly in conversation but freeze when you see an examination question.

Or perhaps you’ve simply been told that aviation training isn’t for you.

Whatever your situation, you’re welcome here.

We’ll have a conversation, identify where you’re struggling and work out an approach that suits you.

It’s About Ability, Not Labels

I’ve never liked the idea that someone should be defined by what they struggle with.

Yes, aviation has standards. Yes, examinations must be passed. And yes, safety will always come first.

I’m not here to lower those standards or promise that everyone will qualify as a pilot.

I’m here to help people reach those standards through teaching methods that actually work for them.

There’s a big difference.

A student who struggles with a traditional textbook might understand the same subject perfectly when it’s explained visually or practically.

Sometimes the problem isn’t the student.

Sometimes it’s the teaching.

A Message to Anyone Who’s Struggling

If you’re currently working towards your PPL, CPL or ATPL and feel like you’re getting nowhere, please don’t automatically assume you’re not capable.

I’ve seen students lose confidence because they’ve failed an exam, struggled with calculations or compared themselves with classmates who appear to understand everything immediately.

But aviation training isn’t a race.

Some people learn quickly. Others need more time, more explanation or a completely different approach.

A pass is a pass, regardless of how you got there.

What matters is that you genuinely understand the subject and can apply that knowledge safely.

And remember, asking for help isn’t a weakness. It’s good airmanship.

Let’s Change the Way We Teach Aviation

My long-term ambition is to help make aviation education more accessible to neurodivergent students.

Not by making examinations easier, but by improving the way we prepare people for them.

I want to see an industry where aspiring pilots aren’t embarrassed to say they’re dyslexic, autistic or have ADHD.

Where instructors recognise that different students need different approaches.

And where someone isn’t written off simply because they don’t fit the traditional classroom mould.

Because the aviation industry needs capable, safe and knowledgeable pilots, and those pilots don’t all think in exactly the same way.

Welcome Aboard

Whether you’re taking your first steps towards a PPL, battling through your ATPL examinations, returning to aviation after a break or simply looking for someone who understands how your brain works, Flightdeck One Tuition is here to help.

No judgement. No unnecessary pressure. No one-size-fits-all teaching.

Just practical, personalised aviation tuition from someone who understands both aviation and the challenges of learning differently.

Your brain isn’t the problem. Finding the right way to teach it is the challenge.
